A VISIT TO THE SAINT MARTIN’S ISLAND

Blue water, beautiful sky, and gentle waves that’s what the one and only coral island of Bangladesh offers at the end of Bangladesh. One can go there and simply fall in love with the beauty of the sea. My visit to this coral island was nothing short of pure joy. Here is a description of a visit to the Saint Martin’s Island to help you plan your next trip.

Reaching Saint Martin’s Island:

To go to the Saint Martin’s Island one must first travel to Teknaf. You can go to Teknaf by bus. You can get ticket for bus from the app Shohoz. There you will find many buses to Teknaf and any kind of seat you want can such as sitting coach, sleeping coach with options for both AC and Non-AC. Bus for Teknaf starts there journey at night so that they can reach their destination in the morning right in time for you to book a seat in a ship to the Saint Martin’s Island. It generally takes around 3 hours to reach Saint Martin’s Island by ship from Teknaf. The journey by ship is very exciting too as you will be able to enjoy the scenic beauty of the sea and if you’re lucky you’d also get to see dolphins in the sea. Finally after a long journey you’d reach the island at noon.

Traveling Within The Island:

Since there is no taxi or bus as public transportation in the island you must travel in battery run auto. Although traveling by auto is a bit costly but its fast and the drivers know their way through the island.

A Place to Stay:

There are hundreds of hotels, motels, and resorts to stay in the Saint Martin’s Island. But if you want to get the whole taste of the island I suggest you stay at a resort by the sea. That way you can visit the beach any time you want and get a beautiful view of the sea.

Why Visit The Island:

Now we come to the main reason of you journey. The island is famous for its blue sea, low tides, enjoyable waves, coral and unique sea food. When you get to the sea beach you’ll get to see there is no beach like this in all of Bangladesh. The sunlight makes the sea look blue and beautiful. You can enjoy the sea beach in many ways. In the afternoon at the time of ebb you want walk on the corals and go up to half a kilometer in the sea without reaching water. When you reach the water you can sit on the corals and enjoy the vastness of the sea peacefully. Evening is the best time to go for a swim in the ocean. The sun starts to come down and the waves start to get bigger. If you are with company you can have a lot of fun in the water. At night the sea takes a different look. The waves get very big and the water takes most of the shore. One can walk for hours by the shore and still not get tired of the beautiful waves and the cool breeze. But that’s not all the coral island offers. There are other activities on the island. For example, you can ride cycles on the shore by renting them. It only takes 40 taka per hour to rent a cycle. You can also go scuba diving. The experience of visiting a new world under the sea will leave you speechless. You can also visit the Chhera Island in the morning. It’s possible to visit there either by an auto or you can also ride a cycle to the island. Boats are also available to take you to the island. It is preferred to go by boat since it will give you the thrill of traveling on sea. The island is full of corals and greenery and visiting the absolute end of Bangladesh will give you a new sense of fulfillment. But make sure to visit the island in the morning since the level of water rises as the day progresses and the island becomes unavailable for visit. Now that you’ve done nearly everything you can in the coral island there’s only one thing left to do, tying sea food. Saint Martin’s Island has a lot of choices in regards of sea food. There are water pomfret, tuna, lobster, crab, squid, octopus and many more. Trying the water pomfret and lobster barbeque is a must. It gives a spicy smoky flavor which you’re sure to miss once you leave the place. But if you’re looking to expand your experience you may also try something totally new.

Epilogue:

At the end of your journey when you’re returning to Teknaf by ship you’re sure to miss the beautiful coral island but also be left with a sense of satisfaction. You’d already be planning your next trip thinking of the time you’ve spent lying in front of the Bay of Bengal on the benches of the shore. While doing so do remember that the Saint Martin’s Island is not open throughout the whole year. It is generally open on the winter season and closed to tourists for rest of the year. So before planning a trip to the island please check whether the island is open for tourists or not. Visiting the island is a one of a kind experience in Bangladesh which is sure to make a permanent place in your memory.
